The Miami MetroZoo, now popularly known as the Zoo Miami, is the biggest and oldest zoo garden in all of Florida. It is also called as the Miami-Dade Zoological Park and Gardens. It is considered as the only tropical zoo in the continent of the United States. People can find it on the old Richmond Naval Air Station, just southwest of Miami, in the southern part of the county. It is a home to more than 2,000 animals, and covers a land of 740 acres. It shows about 100 different exhibits.

How It All Began

The history of MetroZoo started in 1948. Back then, there were only 3 monkeys, a goat, and 2 black bears. These animals were bought for $270, just for a small road show near Miami. The 6 animals marked the beginning of the Crandon Park Zoo, southeast from the coast of downtown Miami. It was pretty small, and it only occupied 48 acres. Soon enough, other animals were added, including an elephant, some lions, and a rhinoceros. And by the year 1967, from the 6 animals, the zoo grew to a number of 1,200 animals. It was noted to be one of the top 25 zoos in the whole country.

Unfortunately, the 1965 Hurricane Betsy killed a lot of animals, around 250 of them. Construction of a new zoo began in 1975, and it later opened in 1980 as the Miami MetroZoo. It came with only 12 exhibits. And as years passed by, more and more exhibits opened. The land area was expanded.

In August of 1992, another hurricane named Andrew came and killed a great number of animals. The zoo reopened in December 1992. And by 2010, it was renamed to Miami-Dade Zoological Park and Gardens, or what is simply known today as Zoo Miami.

There are three main exhibits for the Zoo. First one is Asia, where people can find Asian river otters, Bengal tigers, Komodo dragons and the like. Park Rules

The Santa’s Enchanted Forest will be opened from Monday to Sunday, between 12 am and 5 pm. The admission to the Largest Christmas Free Carnival and Theme Park in the World is $24.86 for children under 9 and seniors and $34.49 for grownups. This ticket includes the park and carnival admission and the rides. Children under 2 years of age are allowed to enter for free. Those who are enthusiastic about the Santa’s Enchanted Forest can opt for a season pass. This option will allow them to enter the park every night except Christmas Day and Saturdays. The season pass also includes VIP access, meaning that the pass holders don’t have to wait in lines. This pass costs $38 for seniors and children 3-9 and $49 for adults. Premier Golf Destination in Miami Beach

The Miami Beach Golf Club is widely acknowledged to be the premier golf destination to be found within the Miami Beach region. This historic course originally opened as the Bayshore Golf Course in 1923. It was part of pioneer developer Carl Fisher’s ambitious plan for development of the Alton Beach subdivision. This was a residential community designed to lure wealthy residents from such northern cities as Detroit, Indianapolis and New York during the winter.

Fisher and his associates had opened 3 large golf courses by 1923. They were all highly successful especially with tourists visiting the region. During World War II, the course was rented out at the rate of $1 a year to the U.S. Army. The army used the course as a training ground. Helmeted, rifle toting soldiers would run through the palm trees amid the screening from smoke grenades.

Chicago investors moved to buy the course in 1944. They had plans to build 650 upscale homes on the site. Neighbors opposed the move and persuaded the city the city to condemn the property, purchase it, and keep it as a golf course.

The ornate, Mediterranean style clubhouse that Fisher had built on the course was replaced in 1954. 48 years later the remodeling of the course was taken much further. The Bayshore Golf Course underwent a $10 million renovation. This would help to make it Miami’s signature course. The face lift was extensive in nature. All of the grass and most of the trees were taken out. The lakes were drained, redesigned, and then filled back in. The irrigation system was replaced. The old clubhouse was torn down, and a new clubhouse was built.

The North Miami Winternational Thanksgiving Day

Thanksgiving is indeed a grand celebration not only in Miami, but for the rest of the world. Watching a parade can certainly help celebrate this day. The North Miami Winternational Thanksgiving Day parade will start at 10:00 am, which may include television and radio personalities. The parade is followed by the Jaycees’ Winternational Festival; there are lots of food, music and carnival rides to complete the celebration.

Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade

Well, if you’re far from Miami, probably in New York, and you still want to enjoy Thanksgiving this year, better join the 86th Annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade that will begin at 9:00am on November 22, 2012. The route is quite new this year. The parade starts at 77th Street to Columbus Circle, along Central Park to 6th Avenue, to 34th Street and to Macy’s Herald Square. The designated public viewing areas are the following:

  • Central Park West: West side of the street, from 70th Street to Columbus Circle, and east side from 70th to 65th
  • Columbus Circle: west side of street
  • 6th Avenue: in between the 58th and 34th streets
  • 34th Street: south side of street, in between 7th Avenue and Broadway
