Every year since 2001, Miami Beach has hosted the super-popular Urban Beach Week. Owners of Miami Beach real estate get a front row seat to what is one of the most well-attended events of the year in South Beach. Over Memorial Day weekend, Miami Beach will be filled with the sounds of some of hip hop’s hottest artists like P Diddy, Lil’ Wayne and more while party-goers enjoy the area’s pristine beaches by day and trendy clubs by night.

About Urban Beach Week

Urban Beach Week attracts both locals and visitors alike, with well over 300,000 people enjoying the festivities during this five-day event. The festival is known for its over-the-top parties and concentration of hip hop concerts, with many celebrities on hand. The event itself is not sponsored by the city, but is instead a long weekend full of performances being held in private venues throughout Miami Beach and the environs.

This is one festival where the sky is the limit. Some of the top DJs from around the world are flown in, pool parties are packed with beach bodies, drinks flow round the clock, and everyone is deck out in their most fashionable wardrobe pieces. All of Miami Beach’s hottest clubs are booked with A-list talent and stay open until the early morning hours to keep the party going.

How It All Started

Urban Beach Week can trace its beginnings back to 1999, when a small group of people decided they wanted a different kind of Memorial Day celebration in Miami Beach. At the time, the festival centered on fashion, and clothing companies began bringing in celebrities to wear their clothes to get some press for their fashion lines. The event was originally known as Urban Fashion Week.

As Miami gained popularity as a vacation destination and celebrity hotspot, more people began attending the event. Soon recording artists and other entertainers took notice and began to schedule concerts and private parties to coincide with the Memorial Day weekend. Since that time, Urban Beach Week has grown to become one of the largest urban festivals in the world with a wide range of events such as a Celebrity Basketball Game, posh pool parties and a reggae festival. It is now known as the ultimate beach party for the hip hop culture. It is estimated that between 350,000 and 450,000 people will attend the event in 2014.

What to Know

Those who own Miami Beach condos and Miami Beach luxury real estate and who plan to be in town over Memorial Day weekend should be aware of the increase in traffic congestion throughout the duration of the festival. With so many people attending the event, there will be additional police presence throughout the area as well as DUI checkpoints. Ocean Drive will be closed to traffic while Washington Avenue and Collins Avenue will become one-way lanes. Plan to avoid driving in the area over the holiday weekend or give yourself plenty of extra time. And if you are in town – why not join in on the fun?

South Beach could easily be called the epicenter of Miami Beach. With its hundreds of entertainment destinations, trendy restaurants, historical architecture and vibrant nightlife, South Beach draws thousands to its colorful shores. While South Beach continues to attract throngs of tourists to its busy yet laid-back neighborhoods, it has also become an excellent place to call home. In fact, South Beach boasts some of the highest property values in all of Miami Beach. Let’s take a closer look at some of the wonderful residential areas that South Beach has to offer.

South Beach Geography

Most people who live and play in Miami Beach understand that the northern boundary of South beach runs along Dade Boulevard from Lincoln Road on the bay side, which then runs east/northeast until it connects with 23rd Street along the ocean. The community is easy to navigate with numerical streets running east/west beginning with First Street. There are 13 main roads that run north/south, which include the popular Washington Avenue, Collins Avenue and Ocean Drive.

Flamingo Park

This neighborhood of mostly low-rise apartment buildings takes its name from one of South Beach’s public parks – Flamingo Park. Residents have easy access to an Aquatic Center, baseball stadium, basketball court, hand and racquetball court, soccer, softball and tennis center, children’s playground, running track and football field – in case you feel like getting a little exercise. The boundaries of Flamingo Park run north of Fifth from Alton Road to Washington Avenue and up to Lincoln Road on the north. It does not include Lennox.

Flamingo West

If you’re in the market for a charming single-family home, Flamingo West may be just what you’re looking for. This neighborhood spans north of Flamingo Park to Lincoln Road and includes Lennox and Michigan Avenues.

Collins Park

Touted as being one of the most up-and-coming neighborhoods in South Beach, Collins Park has loads of charm. Most of the homes and apartments were built in the Art Deco style in the 1930s and 1950s, with new condominiums replacing outdated buildings from the 1980s. The boundaries are 17th Street to 23rd Street, and Washington Avenue/Pinetree Drive to the ocean.

One of the reasons Collins Park has become so hot in recent years is because of all the new development in the area. Residents of Collins Park can enjoy the ultra-luxe Sanctuary Spa Resort, the Miami Beach Convention Center, and an updated public library.

South Beach Condos

Intermixed within the various neighborhoods of the area, South Beach condos are luxurious and sought-after. There are many large-scale developments and buildings within the borders of South Beach. Many of the high-rise communities are found along Bay Road and West Avenue. Some of the spectacular condo buildings found here include:

Portofino Tower
Continuum II
Murano at Portofino
